The "Thousand-Li Journey for Learning" refers to Kim Il-sung's 1925 trek from Mangyongdae to Jilin, China — a journey the DPRK state mythology presents as the founding act of revolutionary consciousness. 2018 marks the 95th anniversary of that departure. These commemorative copper issues from Pyongyang are produced in limited numbers, almost entirely for export through currency dealers in China and Europe, as hard-currency earners rather than circulating coinage.
