The Battle of Pochonbo took place on June 4, 1937, when Kim Il-sung led a small guerrilla force across the Tumen River from Manchuria into Japanese-occupied Korea and briefly seized the town. North Korean historiography elevated it into a foundational myth of the revolution, though Japanese and South Korean historians note the raid lasted only a few hours and caused modest military impact. The 80th anniversary fell under Kim Jong-un, who has systematically reinforced his grandfather's cult to buttress his own legitimacy.
