Issued to mark Kim Jong Il's 50th birthday on February 16, 1992, this coin appeared at a moment when North Korea was actively constructing the cult apparatus around its heir apparent. The elder Kim was still alive; this was one of the earlier state issues explicitly lionizing the son rather than the father, a deliberate signal of the succession that would formalize upon Kim Il Sung's death two years later.
