Additional information

Vanuatu's butterfly coin series, issued in the early 2000s, was produced largely for the collector market rather than circulation — a common revenue strategy among Pacific island nations with limited numismatic infrastructure of their own. The Taenaris catops, an owl-butterfly endemic to the rainforests of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, sits at the edge of Vanuatu's biogeographic range, which makes its selection for this series an arguable stretch geographically. Silver-plated copper-nickel was the production choice across the series, keeping costs low while maintaining the visual appeal necessary for the souvenir and thematic collector market.
