| 表面の説明 | The national coat of arms of Vanuatu occupies the central field, depicting a Melanesian warrior in traditional dress standing upon a pig's tusk, holding an upright spear in his right hand, with two crossed namele fern fronds behind him and a circular motif in the background. A ribbon scroll beneath the central device bears the Bislama motto LONG GOD YUMI STANAP. The legend RIPABLIK BLONG is inscribed along the left and right periphery respectively, with VANUATU along the lower rim, all in Latin characters. The date of issue appears prominently at the top of the field above the arms. |

Vanuatu's coinage is issued under authority established at independence in 1980, when the New Hebrides condominium — jointly administered by Britain and France in one of colonial history's more awkward arrangements — dissolved into the Pacific's first jointly Anglo-French decolonization. The vatu replaced the New Hebrides franc and Australian dollar simultaneously. The coconut crab, Birgus latro, is the largest terrestrial arthropod on earth and remains a significant food and cultural resource across the Vanuatu archipelago, where harvesting pressure has made it locally threatened on inhabited islands.
