Iran's redenomination law, passed in 2020, formally replaced the rial with the toman at a rate of 10,000 to 1 — a move that had been colloquially anticipated for decades, since Iranians had never stopped quoting everyday prices in tomans regardless of what the banknotes said. This note, bridging the transition, carries both designations simultaneously: 10 Tomans in the new unit and 100,000 Rials in the old, a deliberate overlap built into the series to ease public confusion during the changeover period.
The redenomination was partly an admission that cumulative inflation since the 1979 revolution had rendered the rial's face values functionally absurd at the retail level.
