Charles II's reign over Brunswick was one of the more turbulent episodes in early 19th-century German dynastic politics. He succeeded his father Frederick William in 1823 and proved so erratically despotic that the population of Brunswick revolted in 1830, burning the palace and forcing him into permanent exile. The entire window of this coin's production corresponds exactly to his reign — it stopped because he was driven out, not because a new type was introduced.
Fr#739 places this squarely among the Friedrich reference's documentation of German states gold, a series where surviving examples in original condition are complicated by the small population of issued pieces from minor duchies of this period.
