Burma's socialist government under Ne Win nationalized the printing of currency almost immediately after the 1962 coup, and by 1964 the Security Printing Works in Rangoon was producing notes domestically — a deliberate break from the colonial-era practice of contracting foreign printers. This 10 Pya is among the earliest products of that shift.
The 1964–65 issues are also closely tied to the demonetization chaos that followed: the government had already voided the 50 and 100 Kyat notes in May 1964 to undermine black market holdings, making even small-denomination notes like this one part of a politically charged monetary reorganization rather than routine production.
