| Reverse description | A detailed rendering of the full-rigged barque HMS Endeavour under sail occupies the central field, depicted underway on stylized waves. A radiant rising sun with bold sunbeams fills the background to the left, its semicircular orb emerging at the horizon line. The legend THE ENDEAVOUR arcs along the upper periphery, and the date 1995 is inscribed in the lower exergue. |

Tanumafili II, who held the position of O le Ao o le Malo (Head of State) from Samoan independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, was the world's longest-serving head of state at the time of his passing. This small gold piece was issued during a period when Pacific island nations were aggressively producing collector-oriented bullion and commemorative coinage — largely through arrangements with foreign minting agencies — as a means of generating foreign exchange revenue.
The Endeavour connection places this within a cluster of 1990s Pacific commemoratives marking the Cook voyage bicentennials, a theme flogged across dozens of issuing authorities throughout the decade.
