The SMS *Adler* was a German gunboat that met its end in Apia Harbor during the catastrophic hurricane of March 1889 — a storm that destroyed six warships from three nations simultaneously and, in doing so, defused what had been a genuine military standoff between Germany, the United States, and Britain over control of Samoa. The wreck has remained in Apia's waters ever since. This issue was part of Samoa's broader commemorative program under Malietoa Tanumafili II, who held the position of Head of State from 1963 until his death in 2007.
