| Reverse description | Left-facing bust of Fletcher Christian, the English mutineer and master's mate of HMS Bounty, occupies the left portion of the field, rendered in moderate relief with period costume details visible at the shoulder. To the right, a fully rigged three-masted sailing vessel—evoking HMS Bounty—is depicted under sail on open seas. The legend FLETCHER CHRISTIAN 1764 - 1793 curves along the upper periphery, and the issue year 2003 is inscribed in the lower exergue. |

Malietoa Tanumafili II, who served as Samoa's head of state from independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, was the world's longest-serving head of state at the time of this coin's issue. The Fletcher Christian pairing is curious — Christian led the 1789 Bounty mutiny and eventually settled on Pitcairn Island, geographically remote from Samoa but grouped here under a broader Pacific heritage theme common to Samoan commemorative programs of this period.
At 1.24 g, this falls into the fractional gold category increasingly popular with Pacific island issuers in the early 2000s as a low-barrier collector entry point.
