| Obverse description | The obverse features the national coat of arms of Samoa centrally placed in the field, depicting a quartered shield bearing the Southern Cross constellation and a coconut palm over ocean waves, surmounted by a Christian cross. The shield is supported by laurel branches on either side, with a banner below bearing the national motto FA'AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA. The legend SAMOA arcs along the upper periphery, and the denomination $10 appears in the lower field beneath the coat of arms. |

Samoa issued this coin ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa — the first World Cup held on the African continent, awarded to South Africa by FIFA in 2004 after a bidding process that beat out Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, and Tunisia. Samoa has never qualified for a World Cup, making the issue purely commercial rather than celebratory.
