Issued to mark the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species, both falling in 2009 — a coincidence that generated an unusual volume of commemorative issues worldwide that year. Samoa had no particular connection to Darwin's voyages; the Beagle never called at Samoan waters during the 1831–1836 expedition that produced his foundational observations.
