Utrecht's provincial coinage operated under a patchwork of mint agreements throughout the seventeenth century, and by 1682 the province was striking silver largely to meet its share of obligations within the Dutch monetary union — a system perpetually strained by the ongoing costs of defending against Louis XIV's ambitions in the Spanish Netherlands. The States of Utrecht retained nominal control over their mint but in practice adhered closely to the weight and fineness standards negotiated among the Seven Provinces.
Delmonte's classification of this type under the S-series reflects its place within the broader stuiver denominations that saw inconsistent production across provincial mints, with Utrecht issues from this decade generally appearing less frequently in trade than Holland or Zeeland equivalents.
