The Batavian Republic was proclaimed in January 1795 following the French-backed Patriot revolution and the flight of Stadtholder William V to England. Utrecht, long a stronghold of the old provincial coinage system, continued striking under its own mint authority during this transitional window — a brief overlap between the old Dutch federal monetary structure and the centralized republican ideal the Batavians were still working out. This issue belongs to that awkward interregnum, before the 1806 reorganization under Louis Bonaparte forced genuine monetary unification.
