Slovenia introduced this denomination in 1992, the year the country gained international recognition following its brief Ten-Day War of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The aluminium-magnesium alloy was a deliberate economic choice — the new state had no interest in minting coins whose metal value approached face value, and the lightweight composition kept production costs negligible for the smallest circulating unit of the new tolar system.
The series ran until Slovenia's euro adoption on 1 January 2007, making the entire tolar coinage one of the shorter-lived national currency programs in European history at roughly fifteen years.
