This type spans the long middle period of Todor Zhivkov's rule, during which Bulgaria's coinage underwent a quiet but deliberate standardization to reinforce the iconography of the People's Republic. The 1974 redesign that produced this series replaced the earlier coat of arms with a revised version reflecting changes to the state emblem ratified in the 1971 "Zhivkov Constitution" — a document that also formalized the party's leading role in the state apparatus.
Production continued through 1990, the year Zhivkov himself was on trial and the People's Republic ceased to exist.
