Breda came under siege by Spanish forces in 1576–1577 during the Eighty Years' War, and the city's desperate financial position forced municipal authorities to issue emergency coinage in lead — a material so debased it barely qualified as currency. These obsidional pieces were a practical necessity: pay the garrison or lose the city. The Spanish blockade had severed normal supply lines entirely, making conventional silver an impossibility.
Lead siege money of this period survives in highly variable condition, as the metal is prone to oxidation and surface corrosion over centuries. CNM#2.09.3 is among the documented types for this specific siege episode, one of several denominations struck under duress in that single desperate year.
