10 Speciedaler

Norges Bank established its own printing works in 1816, the same year the bank was founded — an unusual decision that kept note production entirely domestic from the outset. The Bentsebrug paper mill, located in Christiania, supplied the bank with watermarked paper throughout much of the nineteenth century; the mill had been producing quality paper since the 1730s and was one of very few Norwegian operations capable of meeting the technical demands of currency stock.

The speciedaler itself was abolished in 1875 when Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union and converted to the krone. Notes of this denomination issued in 1860 would have circulated for up to fifteen years before becoming obsolete.
