10 Somoni Independence

Tajikistan declared independence on September 9, 1991, following the failed August coup against Gorbachev that effectively dissolved Soviet central authority. The country almost immediately descended into a civil war lasting until 1997 — one of the bloodiest post-Soviet conflicts — which makes the commemorative framing of independence as a clean, celebratory moment somewhat complicated by what actually followed it.
