The Silk Road passed directly through what is now Kyrgyzstan, with the Fergana Valley serving as a critical corridor connecting Chinese markets to Sogdian traders moving goods westward toward Persia and Byzantium. The city of Osh, among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Central Asia, functioned as a rest point on the route for over a millennium.
