Manas is the central figure of a Kyrgyz oral epic believed to be among the longest in world literature — some versions run to half a million lines. The 1995 issue marked the official millennium celebration of the epic, a date established largely by Soviet-era scholars in the 1940s who fixed the thousand-year figure as much for political expediency as historical precision. The newly independent Kyrgyz Republic, barely four years out from the Soviet collapse, used the Manas anniversary as a deliberate act of national cultural consolidation.
This is KM#1 — the first coin struck by the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan.
