The Kyrgyz Republic only established its national currency in 1993, two years after independence, following a bitter falling-out with Moscow over monetary policy within the ruble zone. The Som's introduction was abrupt enough that the first notes arrived by cargo plane from a British printer. This bimetallic commemorative, issued a decade later, marks that founding moment — the gold ring a deliberate extravagance for a country that had spent the 1990s in severe economic contraction.
