Issued to mark the 80th birthday of Chingiz Aitmatov, who died in 2008 — just one year before this coin reached circulation. Aitmatov remains the single most internationally recognized literary figure from Central Asia, with works like The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years translated into over 170 languages during the Soviet period, when Kyrgyz cultural output was otherwise systematically suppressed in favor of Russian. The Kyrgyz National Bank has issued relatively few silver commemoratives, making this series thin by any regional comparison.
