Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence from the Soviet Union, declared on August 31, 1991 — one of the quieter exits from the USSR, achieved without the violent rupture that accompanied independence movements elsewhere in the former republics. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic was itself only established in 1992, making this commemorative among the earliest silver issues the institution had authorized in its short history.
