Peru's sol oro coinage of this period was issued under the fiscal framework established after the country abandoned the earlier sol de plata system, with the gold denominations functioning largely as prestige pieces rather than everyday tender. By the late 1950s, runaway inflation was already eroding confidence in Peruvian paper currency, and the gold coins retained a following among private hoarders precisely because of it.
The series ran until 1969, the year after General Velasco Alvarado's military coup, which would eventually culminate in a sweeping monetary reform replacing the sol entirely with the inti in 1985.
