Odoardo Farnese inherited Parma and Piacenza in 1622 and spent much of his reign entangled in the disastrous Castro War against Pope Urban VIII, a conflict that drained ducal finances severely between 1641 and 1644. Billon coinage of this period reflects that fiscal strain — the alloy itself is a concession, stretching silver supply by heavy copper admixture.
Odoardo died in 1646, two years after this issue's production window closed, leaving his son Ranuccio II to inherit both the duchy and its debts.
