Francesco II was the last Sforza duke, ruling Milan under the suffocating supervision of Charles V after the Spanish-Imperial forces retook the city in 1521. His authority was nominal at best — Charles withheld formal investiture until 1524, leaving Francesco in a prolonged legal limbo that made even the act of issuing coinage a politically loaded gesture. He died without a legitimate heir in 1535, and Milan passed directly into Habsburg hands, ending over a century of Sforza rule.
