Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state, making its coinage a technical curiosity — legal tender within a jurisdiction that most of the world officially pretends does not exist. The Bank of Somaliland has nonetheless issued a consistent series of circulating coinage since the mid-1990s, filling a practical void left by the collapse of the Somali shilling in the north.
