Somaliland issued this zodiac series beginning around 2006 as the territory continued operating its own currency infrastructure despite lacking UN membership or broad international recognition. The coins circulated domestically alongside the Somaliland shilling banknotes, filling a practical gap in small-denomination coinage for a young, self-declared republic running a currency independent from the rest of Somalia since 1994.
