Uganda issued this piece to mark the July 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana — one of dozens of Commonwealth nations that struck commemoratives for the occasion, most sharing nearly identical specifications through coordinated blanks supplied to multiple mints. Milton Obote had only just returned to power in Uganda following the 1980 elections, themselves disputed, making the decision to participate in Commonwealth commemorative coinage a pointed signal of re-engagement with Britain after the Amin years.
