Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Matthew Flinders in naval uniform at right, with his name inscribed below in a curved label. The Commonwealth of Australia Arms vignette appears at lower left, flanked by kangaroo and emu supporters above the word AUSTRALIA. The central field carries the denomination in large letterpress text within a guilloche underprint in orange and brown tones, with two manuscript signatures below — those of the Governor, Reserve Bank of Australia and the Secretary to the Treasury. Serial numbers appear twice in the upper portion of the note.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a detailed intaglio vignette of the Old Parliament House in Canberra, rendered in a fine engraved style with surrounding lawns and a cloudy sky. The inscription COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA runs across the top border, with TEN SHILLINGS below it in smaller lettering. A central cartouche at the base displays the denomination numeral 10/-, flanked by the word HALF repeated on either side, with the fraction ½ appearing in each corner.
