The Reserve Bank of Australia was formally established on 14 January 1960, separated from the Commonwealth Bank after decades of debate over whether a government trading bank should also hold central banking functions. This 10 Shilling note belongs to the first series issued under that new authority — a direct continuation of the pre-existing design, with the institutional name updated and little else changed.

The Coombs/Phillips signature combination dates to 1965, the final year of pre-decimal Australian shillings. Decimal changeover arrived on 14 February 1966, which made this entire series obsolete almost immediately and cut short what would otherwise have been a longer circulation run.
