Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received formal international recognition, which has made establishing a functional monetary system an exercise in improvisation. The Somaliland shilling had been so thoroughly devalued by the early 2000s that the government introduced the libra as a redenominated unit, though the transition was gradual and the two names circulated in parallel usage for years among the population.
The "Full leaves" designation distinguishes this die variety from a companion type with a differing reverse treatment — a distinction collectors track under KM#52 specifically.
