| Additional information |
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state, making its currency a legal curiosity — valid domestically yet invisible to international banking systems. The Bank of Somaliland has nonetheless issued a consistent coinage series, partly as a practical necessity and partly as an assertion of administrative legitimacy that paper declarations alone cannot achieve.
The "Empty leaves" designation refers to a die variety distinguished from the filled or detailed leaf version of the same type — a distinction that matters to specialists working through the KM#61 population.
