Somaliland has issued its own currency since 1994, despite remaining unrecognized by any UN member state. These animal series shillings circulate domestically alongside the older Somali shilling, in an economy that functions largely on mobile money transfers — making physical coinage something of a curiosity even within the territory that issued it.
