The FAO coin program, launched in 1968, commissioned member nations to issue coins bearing agricultural themes as a soft-power campaign to raise awareness of food security — Somalia participated across several decades despite the country's government collapsing entirely in 1991. These pieces were struck well into the warlord period, when no functioning central bank existed to actually distribute them.
