Malta's first post-independence banknote series, authorized under the Central Bank of Malta Act of 1967, retained the Queen's portrait despite independence having been achieved in 1964 — a deliberate political choice reflecting Malta's status as a Commonwealth realm. Bradbury Wilkinson produced the full series from their New Malden works, where they held long-standing contracts across British colonial and post-colonial issuers.
The 10 Shilling denomination was short-lived. Malta decimalized in 1972, converting to Maltese Pounds and Cents, which rendered the entire shilling series obsolete within five years of issue.
