Cwmni y Ddafad Ddu Gymreig Cyfyngedig — the Welsh Black Sheep Company Limited — was a novelty issuer operating in the context of Welsh nationalist sentiment during the late 1960s, a period of heightened political activity around devolution and language rights. These notes were never legal tender and circulated as souvenirs or protest pieces rather than genuine instruments of exchange. The "Chief Treasury of Wales" header was a deliberate provocation, issued the same year the Investiture of Prince Charles at Caernarfon brought the question of Welsh autonomy to international attention.
The adhesive stamp as the sole security feature is telling — this was artisan production, not banking infrastructure. Traversi's design work gives it more visual discipline than most such ephemera.
