When New Zealand decimalized its currency on 10 July 1967, it created an immediate problem for its stock of pre-decimal postal orders. Rather than destroy usable instrument stock, the Post Office overprinted existing 10 Shilling orders with their decimal equivalent — 50 cents, not 50 pence as the catalog name suggests. The "50 Pence" designation is a cataloguing anomaly; New Zealand adopted cents and dollars, never pence.
The 1970 date places this well after decimalization, suggesting overprinted stock was still being issued or processed three years into the new currency system — an unusually long tail for transitional instruments of this type.
