Nigeria's transition from the West African Currency Board to its own central banking infrastructure was completed in stages after independence. This 10 Shillings note belongs to the first independent Nigerian series — issued before the country decimalized in 1973 — and reflects the brief window during which Nigeria retained colonial-era denominations while establishing its own monetary identity under the 1958 Central Bank of Nigeria Act.
De La Rue printed the entire inaugural series, a relationship that would later become politically complicated during the Biafran secession when questions arose about which authority could legitimately commission banknote production.
