Malta's 1963 series was issued under British colonial authority just one year before independence — the Government of Malta name on these notes reflects the transitional administrative language of the period rather than a fully sovereign issuing institution. Bradbury Wilkinson, long the preferred security printer for British colonial territories, produced the series from their New Malden works.
The 10 Shilling denomination was withdrawn relatively quickly after Malta adopted decimal currency in 1972, when the pound was replaced by the Maltese lira and the old shilling denominations became obsolete overnight.
