New Zealand retained the shilling-based pound system long after most Commonwealth nations had either decimalized or restructured their currency — this note bridged nearly three decades of that monetary conservatism, surviving the war economy, postwar reconstruction, and the sustained political debate over decimalization that finally resolved with the 1967 switch to the New Zealand dollar. The security thread was introduced mid-series, meaning Fleming-signed examples exist in two distinct states; the threadless Fleming notes are easily mistaken for earlier issues without close inspection of the paper.
Four signature variants across a 27-year run makes this one of the more granular collecting targets in the 20th-century New Zealand series.
