Somalia declared a republic in 1960 following the merger of the former Italian Trust Territory and British Somaliland. By 1969, Siad Barre's coup had replaced the civilian government with a military socialist regime, meaning this tenth-anniversary issue — struck under the Banca Nazionale Somala — commemorates a republic that had already spent nearly half its existence under the Supreme Revolutionary Council.
