Somalia declared itself a republic in 1960 following the merger of the former British Somaliland protectorate and the UN Trust Territory administered by Italy. By 1979, the country was nine years into Siad Barre's military rule, which had taken power in a 1969 coup — making this "anniversary of the Republic" framing a pointed piece of official revisionism, celebrating a civilian founding that the issuing government had itself overthrown.
