Chinese grain ration coupons (粮票, liángpiào) were a direct instrument of the planned economy's household registration system — you could only redeem them in the administrative unit that issued them, which made coupons from one province useless in another. Guangzhou's municipal coupons were particularly restricted in this way, valid only within city limits rather than across Guangdong province as a whole.
The national ration coupon system was abolished in 1993, after which most surviving stocks were pulped or discarded. Small municipal denominations like this 10 shi jin issue were the least likely to be retained.
