| Obverse description | The obverse field is entirely occupied by a bold four-line Persian poetic legend executed in large Nasta'liq calligraphy, proclaiming the legitimacy of Mahmud Shah Hotaki's rule and his role as defender of the faith. The inscription reads that the true religion has been stamped upon gold by divine command and that Mahmud shall be the king and protector of the faith, with the mint name Isfahan (ضرب اصفهان) placed prominently in the lower portion of the field. The legends are rendered in high relief with sweeping cursive strokes characteristic of the Safavid-influenced coinage tradition. The entire design is enclosed within a broad inner border of large, evenly spaced raised pellets, giving the coin its distinctive ornamental frame. The irregular flan and hammer-struck technique produce slight variations in relief and outline typical of early 18th-century Afghan occupation coinage. |
