The 1967 Congolese coinage series was issued just years after independence from Belgium, as the newly renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo worked to establish its own monetary infrastructure following decades of colonial currency dependence. The country was simultaneously navigating the catastrophic aftermath of the Simba Rebellion and the consolidation of Mobutu Sésé Seko's power — a political environment that would, within a decade, produce yet another complete currency overhaul when the zaïre replaced the franc system entirely.
