Japan's shift to copper-nickel for this denomination in 1927 was driven by postwar silver price volatility and pressure to reduce coinage costs following the economic disruption of the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, which had already strained government finances and forced emergency currency measures. The series ran just five years before aluminum-bronze replaced it in 1933.
