Obverse description Central field displays the denomination in two Chinese characters arranged vertically, reading '十錢' (Ten Sen), flanked on each side by a stylized chrysanthemum blossom. The design is framed by two sweeping branches of paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa), with their characteristic heart-shaped leaves and blossoms, curving around the lower portion of the field. A large imperial chrysanthemum — the Emperor's personal seal and symbol of the Japanese imperial house — crowns the composition at the top, above the denomination. The entire design is contained within a plain inner circle, with the reeded edge forming the outer boundary.
